Questions to wireless telecom system designer (WiMAX , LTE, etc.)

  • Are you working on femto or micro base station design?
  • Do you know exactly what your system requirements for timing and synchronization are?
  • Are you familiar with the standards and specifications of IEEE 802.16e and IEEE 1588, ITU/T G.8261, G.823, G.811, Telcordia GR-1244-CORE and more?
  •  What is a maximum phase difference between 1PPS signal for a different locations? Can it be 1 µsec or other tough requirement?
  • Do you need especially low phase noise and low jitter signals? Do you know how to find out?
  • After you realize that you have to use GPS disciplined clock system – does it require a low cost TCXO, a regular OCXO, a bulky double oven OCXO or a big and expensive Rubidium atomic standard? How do you know what is the best for your particular application?
  • How many hours does your system need to hold (holdover) before a maintenance crew is available to fix a problem?
  • Do you have the ability to fit in a suitable GPS antenna, and make sure that the construction will hold out under any weather conditions?
  • Do you have the ability to design the servo system that uses IEEE 1588 protocol and creates a reliable 1PPS and 10MHz clock source that fully tracks the master clock over the network cloud?
  • Don’t you need some redundancy over the clock sources (IEEE 1588, GPS and local oscillator)? Do you have to know how to create a smooth switching over, without slips and gaps to avoid catastrophic behavior?
  • Do you have the ability to design, manufacture and test those clock sources with GPS or IEEE 1588 disciplined oscillators in mass production? Are you able to do that without blowing up your budget limits?
      • And much more questions ahead!

Please do not hesitate – you are not the only one who suffers from these technical pains.
